Government Polytechnic, Purnea is a premier technical institution in Bihar, established in the year 1960 by the Department of Science, & Technology (DST), Government of Bihar. The institute was founded with the visionary objective to set up an effective technical education system and nurture skilled diploma engineers in the region. Officially affiliated with the State Board of Technical Education (SBTE), Patna, the institution possesses all the necessary modern amenities required to function as a centre of academic excellence. To ensure the highest standards of education and research, the college features a team of highly qualified faculty members who are recruited through a rigorous selection process conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC). The campus is structurally well-developed, boasting efficient Smart Classrooms for interactive learning, state-of-the-art laboratories for extensive practical training, and a well-stocked central library with reading room facilities to enhance the overall technical acumen of the students. Currently, the institute provides comprehensive 3-year Diploma programmes in five major engineering disciplines to cater to evolving industrial demands. These branches include Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering. Reflecting its capacity for growth, the Civil Engineering department has an annual intake capacity of 120 students, while the other four specialized disciplines accommodate 60 students each every academic year. Regular admission to the first year of these diploma courses is strictly merit-based and governed by a competitive process. Aspiring candidates must appear for and qualify in the offline Diploma Certificate Entrance Competitive Examination (DCECE-PE) conducted by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB). Following the declaration of the merit list, students undergo a centralized online Polytechnic Admission Counselling process managed by the BCECE board for final seat allotment. In addition to regular entries, the college also facilitates a Lateral Entry pathway that allows intermediate (10+2 Science) and ITI pass students to secure direct admission into the second year or third semester. This fast-track 2-year diploma provision is based on the performance and rank in the DECE (LE) exam.
